I used 2, because I'm overly cautious, and didn't want to be woke up to the sound of my A/C crashing to the ground. One would have worked fine.
They provide solid support to the A/C, so there isn't near as much stress put on my windows, and they were pretty easy to install. The only downside that I can see (literally) is the gap between the bottom of the A/C and my windowsill.
That was unexpected and needed to be filled. That could just be due to my windows being on the sliding tracks instead of the push up style shown in the directions.
I made it in my room and it works perfectly. I squeeze AC by sliding part of the window and put some stop to prevent window to slide (you can buy window stopper in any big stores or use a nail or a screw ).
I put a bracket across my window to simulate the bottom of up-down window for extra support for upper side of AC. The empty space above AC I close with a piece of foam insulation board that you can buy in Homedepot or Lowes. Chose right board thickness for your window, cut from it the exact size of the opening and use tape to secure the piece in opening + close cracks between the board and the window.
You don't need to be a professional contractor to make it work.
